From Here To There - Imperfection

Colorama & Olivier Schrauwen
06.03.26-15.03.26

VROOM presents From Here To There, an exhibition series focused on books, space, and graphic narrative.

The encounter between Olivier Schrauwen (BE) and Colorama (DE) starts with a place: Berlin, the city in which both had lived, and that has sparked a recent collaboration in the form of printing Olivier Schrauwen’s latest book, “Sunday”, chapter by chapter. What was that Berlin feeling that now Brussels can experience?

The work of Olivier Schrauwen is groundbreaking, prospective, playful... but above all: fun. The same kind of feelings could be given to what Colorama has been doing, both as a publisher and printing studio, for more than ten years: creating a rich and colorful catalogue giving a voice to ground-breaking upcoming cartoonists such as Melek Zertal, José Quintanar, Ana Haifisch or Aisha Franz to name a few, but also a key figure in creating a community in the German (but also European) comics and contemporary drawing scene. Examples of that are the open risography workshops that they give, their constant presence in Book Fairs or their annual Clubhouse, a summer residency in where they invite artists from all over the world for a week of drawing together, with the aim of publishing a collective book that is broad to an audience of avid readers.

Colorama is a publishing structure and printing workshop based in Berlin, Germany. Since 2015, Colorama’s goal has been to create a community around comic books, art books and other printed matter from young international talent. Using English as the main language of publishing, their colorful and handcrafted riso-printed books have gained international praise, and their presence in art book fairs (New York Art Book Fair, Brussels Ass Book Fair), comic festivals (Festival of Angoulême) and fanzine festivals (Snail Eye in Leipzig, Offprint Paris, Grafixx).

Olivier Schrauwen is a Belgian cartoonist living in Berlin. Comic books like My Boy, Arsène Schrauwen or his latest Zondag has been translated to many languages (English, French, Spanish, German) and have achieved international acclaim. Next to his work in collaboration with established publishers such as Bries, Fantagraphics or Actes Sud, Schrauwen has been publishing his work with small press structures with publications like Gris (Arbitraire, 2015), the latest issues of Sunday (Colorama, DE, 2022-24), or Dome (Breakdown Press, 2016).

Even more, Olivier Schrauwen has been exploring the relation between his own artistic practice and the stage: his shows mixing animation films and guitar playing at Grafixx Festival (2022) or at the book presentation of the Sunday issues in Berlin (2022) are a proof of the artist’s curiosity of how comic deploy its language outside of the bounds of books and pages.

The event is supported by Tentoo, Passa Porta, Literatuur Vlaanderen, and LUCA School of Arts.
